WHAT WE’VE BECOME

He was exposed at a young age
To the ills of the real world its rough ways
Through the media billboard and front page
Now he don't know if its real or he's just crazy

He's already seen three wars and one hangin
seen disease and pills for the contagions
seen Katrinas that kill boys and young babies
he don't know who to fear but he is afraid

so he hides away and builds a fortress to save him from the danger
and seals the walls so he never sees their faces
until their gone or there’s angels in their places
but still they call, they beg him to escape it

but nah he won't come out he's scared of the fresh air
he's never gonna step outside -- there's death there
and the world that he left behind, it ain't change
but they can't see his eyes so they can't take aim

and he's safe...at least until they come and break the walls down,
find him hiding from the lies they build their lives 'round
out there they're just preparin to die
he ain't afraid of dying but he's barely alive

we see what we've become and
we know we can't survive
would we rather be casualties or be alone now?
either we all confront it
or we just close our eyes and hide
til it all just fades away

so now he can't hear the guns bang
its been a year and he ain't seen a blood stain
or heard the cries from the wives of the ones slain
but he ain't sure if he's better for what's changed

he's still a boy he ain't meant to be contained
and there's a void in the balance where love hangs
he learned to vanish but he wants to be untrained
cuz alone is even harder than afraid

so now he goes and starts to listen as the questions in the back of
his mind form
is he really living if there's nothing he'd die for?
is this what we wanted, being alone in his own mind
to hide behind the walls that he built but he won't climb?

it's wrong, but god only knows why
he's looking for the answers that he knows he won't find
cuz he’s still livin life like he only hopes he won't die
but he sees what he's become, so he opens both eyes

he's afraid...he sees them tryin to come and break the walls down
sees the liars and the lies they build their lives 'round
but bein scared ain't a reason to hide
so he lets the walls fall and he feels so alive...

we see what we've become and
we know we can't survive
would we rather be casualties or be alone now?
either we all confront it
or we just close our eyes and hide
til it all just fades away

so we're safe...at least until they come and break our walls down
and find us hiding from the lies they build their lives 'round
out there they're just preparin to die
and we ain't afraid of dying but we're barely alive

or we're afraid...we see them tryin to come and break our walls down
see the liars and the lies they build their lives 'round
but bein scared ain't a reason to hide
so we let the walls fall and we feel so alive...

we see what we've become and
we know we can't survive [we know we can’t survive, we know we can’t survive, but we gon’ stay alive until they come get us]
would we rather be casualties or be alone now?
either we all confront it
or we just close our eyes and hide
til it all just fades away

we see what we've become and
we know we can't survive [we know we can’t survive, we know we can’t survive, but we gon’ stay alive until they come get us]
would we rather be casualties or be alone now?
either we all confront it
or we just close our eyes and hide
til it all just fades away
